Purpose and Content

The aim of the course The aim of this course is to introduce a general approach to Folk Literature as a part in Turkish Literature; give information about terminology; state the relation between Folk Literature and Folk Science; give information about anonymous and individual works and their style and genre.
Course Content “Folk” term, “literature” term, “folk literature” term and its field, subjects of folk literature, the role of folk literature in national unity, studies and works on Turkish Folk Literature, the information of style and genre about anonymous and individual works in folk literature are the contents of this course.

Weekly Course Subjects

1The concept of folk literature, relation between folklore and folk literature, remodeling of Turkish literature in Anatolia, sources of folk literature and folklore.
2Fundamentals of folk literature, Pre-Islamic Turkish Literature, Turkish Literature after Islam, Anonymous Turkish Folk Literature, Religious-Mystical Folk Literature, Minstrel Literature.
3Format and types of Turkish Folk Literature, Verse format, rhyme and rhyme types.
4Style in Folk Literature, expression of aesthetic in folk literature, content of Folk Poetry, theme and topic in Folk Literature.
5Themes in Folk Poetry: Love and aspiration.
6Themes in Folk Poetry: Bravery and death.
7Themes in Folk Poetry: Society, religion.
8Midterm Exam
