Purpose and Content

The aim of the course The aim of this course is to introduce the tradition of Aşık Style Poetry, which has its roots in Central Asian Turkish culture, and to examine the products that have been produced.
Course Content The content of this course consists of subjects such as the historical roots of Saz poetry within the scope of the Folk Literature course and the integrity of Turkish Literature, the basic elements brought by the saz poets from the Central Asian Turkish culture, the continuation of the tradition in the new culture environment, the transition process from the poet to the minstrel, and the products of the saz poets, their performance environments and types.

Weekly Course Subjects

1The tradition of Turkish poetry in the pre-Islamic period, the importance of literary genres and cult system in Folk Literature.
2The extensions of the saz poets before the Islamic period, the union of the haruk and the kopuz.
3The Importance of Poets in Ancient Turks and "Narrator-Audience" Communicative Model.
4Continuation of the tradition of singing poetry accompanied by musical instruments in Anatolia.
5General characteristics of poems suitable for tradition bearing the stamp of the individual.
6Information and clues about the existence of saz poets in the Ottoman Turks in Western sources.
7The first instrumental poets whose names and poems were found in the Anatolian field.
8Mid-term exam.
9The transition process from bard type to Aşık type, from epic to story.
10Turkish instrumental poetry and important figures in XIV-XVI centuries.
11Turkish instrumental poetry and important figures in XVII-XVIII centuries.
12XIX-XX. Turkish saz poetry and important figures in the centuries.
13Historical performance environments of our saz poetry and examples of contemporary saz poetry in electronic environment.
14General evaluation.
