What is Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery?
Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a department affiliated to Faculty of Dentistry clinical sciences. In this department, there are specialist physicians, general dental practitioners, intern dentists, anesthesia technicians, nurses and auxiliary staff besides faculty members.
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a medical field of occupation that performs medical and surgical treatment of congenital and acquired diseases of soft and hard tissues of the mouth, jaws and face, and aesthetic, functional and phonetic problems caused by infectious, traumatic and all pathological reasons.
What problems does Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery deal with?
Pulling out impacted, complex or erupted teeth,
Medical and surgical treatments of all kinds of infections of the mouth, jaws and face,
Surgical treatment of cystic and tumoral formations of jaws,
Treatment of soft tissue diseases of the oral area,
Diagnosis of systemic diseases that appears in the mouth, jaws and face and directing them to medical specialties related to medical consultations when it is necessary,
Treatment of tooth-induced intraosseous lesions (apicoectomy),
Treatment of fractures in the jaws and face areas,
Surgical correction of soft and hard tissues before dental prosthesis construction,
Medical and surgical treatments of the pain in the jaws and face regions,
Medical and surgical treatments of temporomandibular joint diseases,
Treatment of cleft lips and palates,
Medical and surgical treatments of salivary gland diseases,

Local anesthesia (limited anesthesia) is sufficient for many intraoral surgical procedures. In addition, general anesthesia is required for comprehensive surgical interventions of the mouth, jaws and face. Patients with dental phobia, nausea reflexes, pediatric patients and patients who cannot be treated under local anesthesia due to their physical and mental disabilities may require intervention under general anesthesia or sedation. Such practices can be carried out in the hospital of our faculty.
